Fellowship
At La Habra Hills Presbyterian Church, we encourage people to develop Christ-centered lives through loving relationships, life-long discipleship, passionate worship and compassionate outreach.
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, servicing the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12: 10-13
As a church body, we seek to be devoted to one another and to serve one another with the gifts the Spirit has given us. LHHPC offers a variety of opportunities for people of all ages to become more closely connected. In order to minister to people’s deeper needs, relationships are formed through adult classes, small groups, retreats, social events and ministry projects. We are open to fresh ways to enrich our fellowship and encourage authenticity as our relationships with one another grow deeper.
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Colossians 2: 6-7
Receiving Christ as Savior and Lord is just the beginning of the Christian life. In relationship with Jesus, we are called to follow Him as changed men and women into a new kind of life in which we are yielded to God’s transforming power, faithful in prayer, and obedient to His word. We seek to foster spiritual growth in ourselves and each other through the study of Scripture and various ministries of the church.
Here are just some of the opportunities for the men and women of our church as well as those in our community to establish and grow loving relationships and foster life-long discipleship .
Growing in Faith Together (GIFT) Hour -
Adult Education Classes
Sunday Mornings at 9:00 AM
It is certainly a gift that the whole church can gather for an hour prior to our worship service to grow in faith and in relationships with one another. Our adult educational program provides a time to gather in fellowship and study of God’s Word each Sunday morning. Sunday school classes for the children are also held during the 9:00 GIFT Hour. Classes are taught by a variety of teachers, offering a choice of Bible studies and topical studies as well as classes on relevant issues of our day. Classes are open to young adults and older who are interested in building their faith.
Fall 2011 Class Schedule
Starting Sunday, September 18, there will be three classes to choose from:
Ezekiel with Dave Worcester: Ezekiel is one of the most overlooked and yet complex and satisfying books in the Bible. It is unsurpassed in its relevance to America and the world we find ourselves in today. Ezekiel is a priest who was deported to the rural areas of Babylon following the second siege of Jerusalem, along with many of his countryman. The book records Ezekiel’s call as a prophet to the southern kingdom of Israel at the famous scene where he saw wheels in a wheel and the throne of God. The book then uses a series of strange similes that try to instill repentance in those who were deported with him. The Israelites believed God would defend them but it was too late. Their hypocrisies and idol worship had brought God’s wrath upon them. After the fall of Jerusalem, Ezekiel deals with judgment on the Muslim nations surrounding Israel and God’s final restoration of the Jews in Israel… the fulfillment of which began in 1948. Ezekiel ends with the Valley of Dry Bones, the Gog/Magog invasion and the Millennium kingdom. These are all on our horizon. You are invited to come and see how this affects us as Christians in a country that has lost its focus on Christ.
“Joseph, How God Builds Character” with John and Marlene Dobrenen: People who have integrity live integrated lives. Their life convictions and their lifestyles match. What they say they believe gets worked out in the way that they live. Their actions, values and behavior stay consistent – whether celebrating Sunday worship with the fellowship of the faithful or transacting business on Monday in the marketplace. Their character distinguishes itself by consistency – whether relating to family and friends on weeknights, or retreating to moments of isolation where only God sees their actions. Joseph went through some hard times. He was sold into slavery and eventually imprisoned for years because of a false accusation. And yet, Joseph was able to live in forgiveness and hope, and God did some great things each step of the way. As we read his story, we will find our own place in the journey to seeing God’s dreams fulfilled in and through us.
Christian Theology 101 with Ian Hodge: The word “theology” literally means the study of God and in Christian Theology 101 that is exactly what we will aim to do – to know God a little bit better. We will seek to encounter Him by learning about different Christian doctrines, from the doctrine of the Trinity to the doctrine of the Bible to the doctrine of the church. Along the way, we will meet some of the great theologians of the church and discover how each one of us is actually a bit of a theologian as well. Whether you are a new believer or a lifelong believer, you will run into ideas that you have never considered before that have the potential to help change your life to be more like Jesus.
Bible Study Groups
Small Bible study groups have been a cornerstone of La Habra Hills Presbyterian Church life for over thirty years as a way to study and discuss God’s Word, so that we are better able to witness our faith and deepen our relationships with God and one another. Some groups follow a more traditional format guided by a worksheet on the Bible passage that is prepared prior to the meeting while other groups are driven by discussion during the meeting focused on discovering and applying the truths of the passage. Choose the format that will assist you in growing as a disciple.
These small groups are open to all – from brand-new believers to those who have years of experience. It is a great place to build relationships and make new friends. Groups meet at the church and in homes for 1-2 hours each week. Call the church office for more information on how to become involved in this powerful program.
Men’s Bible Study and Fellowship
This is an opportunity for the men of our church and the surrounding community to gather for fellowship, bible study and prayer.
- Weekly Breakfast Bible Study – Every Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM in the Bride’s Room at the church
- Monthly Breakfast and Bible Study – One Saturday each month at 8:00 AM in the Social Hall at the church. See the Church Calendar for the next scheduled meeting.
Women in the Word
Thursday Mornings from 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Women of our church and surrounding community are invited to this weekly Bible study. The group meets September through the end of April and takes a break over the summer months. Starting in September 2011, the women will be studying the Book of Job.
Job is a book of wisdom, poetry and praise. It is also about the faith of one man who suffered but did not turn away from God. There are parallels between Job and Jesus. Both are righteous, tempted, impoverished, afflicted, rejected, faithful and restored. Job may be described as an intermediate Adam. Adam is a man of sin, Job is a man of suffering and Jesus is a man of salvation. In contrast with the first Adam, Job does not sin and yet he suffers the effects of sin and asks “Why?” Why do the wicked prosper and the innocent suffer in an orderly universe created by a just God?
The time together begins in the church Social Hall with a continental breakfast, fellowship, devotions and announcements followed by small group meetings to discuss study questions and to pray for each other.
Four times a year the women have luncheons for the entire group to enjoy. Women in the Word also provide dedicated support in the form of gifts and prayer to one of our church missionary families; The Jacksons. You can read more about their work by viewing the Mission page on our church web site.
A weekly offering is taken to meet our expenses. Child care is available by reservation by calling the church office or Cathy Herman at 562 697 – 2572, so that adequate help is available.
Come join us! No pre-registration is required. No previous Bible study experience is necessary because the study questions are asked so that you may answer them on your own and share as you wish. Take the initiative and invite a friend to join you.
